From the pulsing heartland of Ohio, where life burns like a fiery Roman candle until it eventuallytturns to ash, emerges SUMMORE. This duo manifests the duality of shadowy synthpop, like an alchemist transforming melancholy into a captivating musical narrative. Julie’s voice is the ghostly wind whispering through the aftermath of a pyre, her synth work sparking like glowing embers, flickering in the night. Justin is a skilled sculptor of sound who uses his synthesizer expertise and precise production techniques to bring his musical creations to life.
Now, the band announces a cathartic new single with an accompanying video: “Dust,” the second offering from their second full-length album, “New Pain.”
“Dust” tells the poignant tale of the aftermath of a life-altering car accident. The opening lines lay bare the stark disparity between our external visage and the internal tumult we navigate. This contrast captures the lingering emotional tether that endures well past the event itself, signifying the enduring impact of such a traumatic experience.
Venturing into the depths of recovery, self-doubt, and the dread of isolation, the song prompts us to view our vulnerabilities as catalysts for transformation and empowerment. “Dust” encapsulates the ephemeral essence of existence, transforming this delicate symbol into an emblem of robust resilience. Even amid adversity, we harbour an infinite inner strength of the human spirit.
“The song exposes the raw vulnerability and fragility that emerge from such a harrowing experience, as we grapple with the fear of being overwhelmed by societal expectations, but also it reflects our search for self-acceptance amidst the physical and metaphorical wreckage,” says the band.
“Dust” sends a powerful plea, beckoning us to welcome our flaws and find comfort in realizing that we are wholly adequate in our existing form. It’s a clarion call for acceptance of our vulnerabilities, inspiring us to perceive them not as weaknesses, but as potential catalysts fueling our most significant strengths.
The self-directed video for the song portrays Julie as she roams the cavernous heart of a cave, ensnared within the stone edifice sculpted by centuries of water’s relentless touch – an apt metaphor for both isolation and metamorphosis. The geological parallels drawn between a cave and a diamond hint at the complex conditions under which the earth alters its form. The song encapsulates this mutable aspect of our planet under varying circumstances. Change might advance at a pace as slow as a glacial movement – yet, in its wake, we are reborn, evolved into something novel and unexpected.

The music of SUMMORE emanates a captivating, somber allure, akin to a siren’s song stitched with hypnotic motifs. Amidst these profound, arpeggiated synth currents, an enthralling contrast is unveiled: Julie’s melodic vocals perform an elegant dance atop the dark sonic waves, while contemplative lyrics beckon listeners to dive into an abyss of poetic profundity. SUMMORE extends beyond being just another synthpop duo – they constitute an auditory journey, a nocturnal conversation between sorrow and symphony. Venturing into shadowed corners, they unravel the mysteries of the human condition, one synth note at a time.
New Pain comes out on August 27, 2023.
