Dark Punk Quartet Totenwald Drift Through Berlin’s Different Realities in Their Video for “Black Drops”

Berlin’s dark punk quartet Totenwald (German for “forest of the dead”) have unveiled their fascinating music video for the sultry and seductive track, “Black Drops”.

Filmed over several months during the pandemic by guitarist Robert Hanna in Berlin and Brandenburg, the video follows singer Trish Tank as she drifts in and out of consciousness. Untethered, her perception of reality begins to spiral and she completely disassociates from her companions and surroundings, driven by cold drum machines, jagged post-punk guitars, and a powerful vocal delivery. Plus, like any good New Wave track, there’s a steamy sax solo.

Tank cuts a severe figure in her military coat, facial piercings, and pastel spiked hair; to see someone decked in such armour completely check out and find herself navigating with vulnerability through such dangerous and provocative situations is jarring; like watching a disturbing dream unfold in front of you, or recalling a terror in the past.

Watch the video for “Black Drops” below:

Totenwald are teaming up with Bat-Cave Productions for a live, in-studio recording session for L.A.’s Part Time Punks, recorded during their 2019 West Coast US tour. The CD, titled Part Time Punks Session +EPs, contains five songs recorded live in Comp-NY studio by Be Hussey, as well as bonus tracks of their two EPs Wrong Place, Wrong Time, and 2019’s Forward to the Past. The album was mastered by Chris Hanzsek at Hanzsek Audio (US).

For this project, Totenwald recorded one song from each of their previous releases, as well as “Closed Circuits”, a previously unreleased track. The CD comes packaged in a 4-panel Digipak along with a 12-page lyric booklet with photos and artwork.

You can also purchase the Part Time Punks Session +EPs  here.
