Dark Post-Punk Outfit Secret Shame Debut Earnest Confessional “Color Drain”

Why do I romanticize my own problems?
Cause It only helps to hurt when you’re in pain
do I romanticize my own trauma?
Does it help to hurt when you’re in pain?

Gothic post-punk outfit Secret Shame makes a return with the mournful, deeply personal “Color Drain,” the latest single from the Asheville, NC band’s forthcoming second full-length studio album, Autonomy, due out on October 28th.

On an album already teeming with direct, soul-baring lyrics, “Color Drain” is a brutally raw, honest confessional; despite being abstract at points. The song addresses a long battle with anorexia, and is about how it feels to walk through the world in an apathetic and dissociative state after a refusal to accept help. Secret Shame’s vocalist, Lena Machina, finished the lyrics while walking into the studio to track them.

Color Drain is another look at pandemic-era paranoia during the height of the pandemic, and addressing the fear of losing loved ones from the fallout of mental illness. Machina’s emotional delivery in this beautiful offering is heart-wrenching, but strong and determined.

Secret Shame pull from a wide range of influences, including post-punk, deathrock, shoegaze, and dream-pop. The band formed in the summer of 2016, releasing their self-titled EP the next year. Their 2019 debut full-length Dark Synthetics received widespread critical acclaim. They have opened for Xiu Xiu, Wednesday, Soft Kill, Choir Boy, and Vision Video.

The band is embarking on a month-long full US tour to support Autonomy, sharing east coast dates with the goth-pop band Vision Video.

Autonomy is out on October 28, 2022.
