I spun my web and waited
The abyss, in my veins had melted
In the myth of Arachne, the proud weaver dares to rival the gods, spinning her fate into a tapestry so exquisite, so deeply unnerving, that Athena herself could only respond in envy and rage, transforming her into an eternal spinner, condemned forever as a spider. It is from this haunting tale of divine retribution, metamorphosis, and the ominous intricacies of craft and creation that Montreal duo SU weave their spellbinding visions into their beguiling new music video, “Arachnid.”
Formed in 2016, SU, the evocative project of Sarah Emilie (Hexapheen) and Ursa Minor (Let Us Out), intertwines threads of trip-hop, industrial bleakness, and cinematic grandeur. Having built their narrative through four EPs, a conceptually immersive single series, and their striking debut album “he(art) is a moment,” SU continually explore new sonic realms, unbound by conventional genre constraints. February’s dual single, “The Web 2.0//Arachnid,” encapsulates their evolving ambition, and now, “Arachnid” emerges visually, conceived as a shadowy tableau vivant by filmmaker Jordan Dorey.
“Arachnid,” mixed by Justin Bennett (Skinny Puppy, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult), descends into a fairy-tale nightmare, conjuring baroque atmospheres haunted by icy vocal harmonies and unsettling, discordant chimes. Emilie and Minor shift seamlessly from whispered lullabies to chilling cries, echoing the fractured innocence of childhood fears.
In this candlelit visual narrative, the velvet-draped dreamscape unfurls into a ritualistic theatre of the occult. Our protagonists are bound in delicate webs, sipping enigmatically from ornate chalices, their eyes shrouded in blindfolds, guided only by flickering flames. The imagery, both translucent and vividly sensual, evokes the disorientation of surrendering to primal instincts—captivating us in a ritual dance, half-submission, half-control.
