Ashville, North Carolina Dream Pop collective Crooked Ghost present their new single ‘Sinew in Red’, a languid melancholic daydream laced with androgyny and art-rock vocals from their forthcoming EP Colors Bleed.
Of the song, vocalist and guitarist Ray Lark explains:
“Sinew in Red was written in response to trauma, but to me, there’s a lot of strength and empowerment in this song. It also touches upon things like vanity and lust… It’s essentially about being in the closet and having a dirty secret no one is supposed to know, but you ratted yourself out.”
The video was filmed and directed by Devan Burger, and edited by Rome Widenhouse, who notes that the video is full of visual metaphors:
“Sinew in Red is a journey through the wasteland of a fractured psyche, exploring one’s relationship to the self; Burdened by the weight of obsession in a vain attempt to find cohesion in a cacophony of inner voices in conflict with one another.”
Ray Lark adds:
“I like to approach our videos as short films set to music, rather than music set to film. There were 2 main locations for this: an eerie unfinished room in my house and the ruins of a house that had burned down. There’s a post-apocalyptic vibe to some of the scenes here which I really love. There’s an androgyny and sensuality to this video, and a struggle for identity that I’m really drawn to. It’s a very personal song about vanity and self-obsession, and the video has a lot of rawness and depth. I hope it can resonate with anyone feeling lost or trapped. Both of our previous videographers got to collaborate on this, with Devan Burger directing and filming, and Rome Widenhouse taking the editing role and sealing together the storyline.”
