Chicago darkwave trio, French Police, have announced the release of their new album, “BULLY,” and with it comes the debut of a video for Jetta Negro.
In this captivating Spanish track channeling the morose musings of Molchat Doma, KINO and Lebanon Hanover, we find a seamless blend of anticipation and a quest for authenticity. The thrill of new love stirs a tangible anxiety, vividly described in the lyrics as ‘palms slick with sweat,’ sparked by a partner’s actions. Yet, amidst this tension, there’s comfort in the gentle affirmations received, be it through compliments on personal accessories like eyewear or the warmth of a lingering embrace. And yet – beneath these passionate interactions lies a turbulent search for self-discovery, marked by a deep desire to fully embrace one’s true self. This inner journey faces obstacles, with echoes of restraint from their partner, casting a pall over the narrator’s quest for the truth within.
Directed by Christian Morales, the video for Jetta Negro strikingly evokes a post-Soviet perspective on mundane existence, to the extent that one might be surprised to find it set in Chicagoland rather than Moscow. The viewer is transported through a frosty suburban landscape, accompanying the band on brief cigarette pauses and a journey through the remnants of the American Dream. It presents a stark scene—chilly, snow-laden, utterly lacking in splendour; a monotonous expanse. Yet, within this bleakness, there emerge fleeting glimpses of beauty, bonds of friendship, and moments of camaraderie.

Brian Flores doesn’t merely perform on this latest album; he confronts his past demons. “This album is dedicated to the bullies of my past,” he states, reimagining “BULLY” as a tale of triumph and empowerment. This bold declaration highlights the band’s consistent courage in facing their darkest challenges, unafraid to sport shades in the darkest hours.
