Earlier this year, Chelsea Wolfe bestowed upon us She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She, her seventh studio album released through Loma Vista. This latest release continues to push the boundaries of gothic soundscapes and themes boldly. Today, she presents the album’s first remix, House of Self-Undoing, one of the album’s songs reimagined by Boy Harsher.
With their quintessential darkwave touch, Boy Harsher sprinkles their shadowy enchantment on this standout track, morphing it into a sultry synth-driven dream. The remix romantically transforms the song into a blend of dream pop and subtle trip-hop, conjuring the tune that could coax shy wallflowers into full bloom under a starry disco-ball light cascading like cherry blossoms in spring.
The original track delves into intense emotions and inner turmoil, chronicling a profound connection to someone who consistently departs, leaving heartache in their wake. It portrays a struggle to break free from this emotional cycle, longing for forgiveness and liberation while feeling ensnared in a loop of desire and loss. Boy Harsher reshapes Wolfe’s signature atmospheric sound into something more…
“I love how Boy Harsher totally transformed this song into something new,” says Wolfe. “It’s really fun to hear my voice in this context — I so appreciate Jae and Gus bringing their energy to the House of Self-Undoing.”
“I love remixes because they have a mind of their own,” adds Augustus Muller of Boy Harsher. “I typically remove everything and follow the vocals. Chelsea’s voice is so beautiful and vulnerable on this track, and I was just trying to make room for it. I was getting a bit of an R&B vibe and tried to lean into that.”
