Californian Dreampop Duo Purple Dynamine are Steeped in Violet in “Autumn Night”

Californian Dreampop duo Purple Dynamine—a project formed in 2016 by Kevin and April McVey, have recently released their DIY video for the track “Autumn Night”, a song taken from their split 12″ EP“Etheric Fauna & Pristine Antiquity” with Grave Saddles (Formerly Ambersmoke).

The band unapologetically wears their influences on its sleeve, alluding to the 1985 Cocteau Twins EP Tiny Dynamine, which itself references a genus of nymphalid butterflies found in South America. That EP, along with its sister Echoes in a Shallow Bay, loaded with naturalist inspired songs named for species of butterfly, permeate the song “Autumn Night” with unadulterated early 4AD glory, which is evident for the track leaning in hard with its thick drum machines, viscous basslines, and reverb-soaked vocals.

Of the songs on the split release, Kevin and April remark:

“We recorded the full instrumentals of these songs in 2016 to be part of our full-length release and didn’t feel compelled to finish them until we decided to do this split with our dear friends in Grave Saddles (formerly Ambersmoke). Enjoy”
