Brooklyn’s Kind Kid Debuts Video For Wistful Jangle-Pop Daydream “08”

i guess we didn’t really know
where the time would go

In a whimsical twist of emotion, akin to the sepia-toned memories of yesteryears, there’s something inherently magical about dipping one’s toes into the pools of vanishing adolescence. Brooklyn’s Kind Kid crafted a dainty yet poignant note to his Texan youth, birthing the “post-emo” echoes of the tenderhearted ballad ’08.

Imagine, if you will, a sojourn back to those fleeting days – a realm untouched by the frenetic pulse of the world. ’08 is perhaps not just a track, but an alcove, a quiet corner amidst the clamor, where one could sit, sigh, and serenade the ghosts of our former selves, drowning out the world with the orange foam headphones of a vintage Walkman.

“This song means a lot to me, as it’s essentially an autobiography,” says the artist. “References to the hallways at school, the boredom of coming home and flipping on the TV only to realize I was better off outside skating with friends, the summer days… It’s a moment in time where I really came into who I am today.”

The video, directed and filmed by Jaxon Duron, was cinematically influenced by videos from Echo & The Bunnymen, OMD, and the Psychedelic Furs. It shows the artist revisiting these moments as an adult, retracing the steps of his memories. It is sentimental without being cloying; gentle vignettes of happy moments.

In the midst of this dreamy retrospection, a touch of melancholy wafts through the air, a poignant reminder of the ephemeral nature of childhood friendships. The real golden threads of those days weren’t just in the sun-drenched fields or the wind-swept streets of Texas, but in the laughter, the shared secrets, and the mischief of the neighbourhood kids. But just as with migrating birds, they’ve each taken flight, charting their own courses, leaving behind only echoes in the wind.

Now, as Kind Kid stands amidst the familiar yet silent landscape, there’s an overwhelming sensation of solitude. It’s as if he’s in a dance with spectres, where the music is the gentle hum of memories, and his playmates the shadows of a time long passed. The single is a heartfelt embrace of those joyful moments, and a longing for the camaraderie that once was.
