Boston Post-Punk Outfit The True Faith Debut New Single “In Vain”

Boston’s The True Faith are anything but complacent. Their creative process is still heavily influenced by their experiences as medical students, which them to the raw realities of life, death, and the human condition. This experience, as well as an unforgiving New England winter, shaped The True Faith’s sound and emotional depth when they formed in 2020.

Today, The True Faith has returned with their latest single, “In Vain,” following the success of their sophomore album, “Go to Ground.”

In Vain” takes listeners on a nostalgic journey into the inner workings of Travis Benson’s mind, evoking the spirit of kindred musical souls such as Big Country, Blancmange, and The Church. The track is driven by a pulsating rhythm section that propels the music forward, cutting through the atmospheric noise of Quentin Moyer’s guitar work. The song’s hypnotic melodic theme is carried throughout, creating a mesmerizing soundscape.

Bass player Dylan Kotliar expands the group’s sound by taking on a new role on the piano, bringing in sophisti-pop influences while maintaining the edginess that defines The True Faith’s songwriting, seamlessly integrating new sounds and textures that add depth and complexity.

“This song started off as a musical challenge to ourselves,” muses Benson. “After the recording of ‘Go to Ground,’ we wanted to find a way to highlight other aspects of our songwriting beyond that guitar-driven sound we’ve honed over the past several releases…The guitar track is a single riff that goes unchanged throughout the song. This allowed us to focus on how differences in the rhythm section can define and alter a melody.”

The intricate interplay of these musical elements serves as the perfect foundation for Benson’s emotionally charged vocals, which convey a sense of isolation and existential despair. Tapping the creative mind of Ryan Santos Phillips as their producer, and expertly mastered by Josh Bonati (Drab Majesty, Choir Boy), each component of “In Vain” blends together seamlessly. The poignant result is a haunting cry into the abyss that leaves the listener wondering why everything feels utterly Sisyphean.

The True Faith’s music is a reflection of the complexities of life and the depth of emotions that comes with the experience of being human. The True Faith’s willingness to delve into these often-uncomfortable subjects sets them apart as they challenge listeners to confront their own struggles, and to seek meaning in the chaos of existence.
