Bernard Sumner Reunites with Johnny Marr on Stage to Perform Electronic’s “Get the Message”

Two Mancunian legends, Bernard Sumner of New Order, and Johnny Marr of The Smiths, reunited on stage in Athens, Greece, on Sunday night to perform the 1991 single “Get the Message” from their former collaborative project band Electronic.

The pair came together for the one song during Marr’s set at the Release Athens festival, when Marr invited Sumner, who was also performing that night —as New Order were headlining the festival—to sing lead on a track Marr had been including in his recent solo set lists.

Previously, Sumner had joined Marr onstage back in 2013 to perform at a New Order-curated event in the shadow of the University of Manchester’s Lovell Telescope near Cheshire, England.

Getting Away With It” was a track that also featured Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys on backing vocals, and which later appeared on Electronic’s 1991 self-titled debut, along with “Get the Message”
