Belarusian New Wave Trio Dlina Volny Debut Video for Dark Brut-Pop Track “Do It”

“When it’s sunny here, it looks like a Soviet fairytale come true. On a dark day, it looks like dystopia.”

Belarusian trio Dlina Volny debut their dazzling brut-pop video for their wonderful new track, “Do It”, from their new album Dazed. The band’s name, which translates to English as “wavelength,” is an homage to their fascination with sine waves and the physics of sound.

The instruments set the stage for contralto vocals that hover like a warm fog on a chilly night. Dwelling somewhere on the event horizon where Eastern European post-punk collides with Western synth-wave, Masha Zinevitch’s ethereal, wailing voice pivots between Ales Shishlo’s morse-code arpeggios and the icy licks of Vad Mikutski electric guitar, weaving mystical narratives and dreamlike fantasies sourced deep in the trio’s subconscious. Walking the tightrope dangling between pain and euphoria, the lyrics wrestle with polarity: anxiety vs. passion; hope vs. deep despair; positive and negative space.

If they remind you a little of Chromatics, it’s no coincidence. “Do It” was mixed by frequent David Lynch collaborator, sound designer, and producer Dean Hurley, known for Twin Peaks’ third season as well as his work with Jorja Chalmers, Desire…and Chromatics. We also hear The Knife, Molly Nilsson, Boy Harsher, and Beach House in their sound.

The video, produced by Alex Skidan and directed by Yauheni Sinichenko, stars the band in a surrealist, underwater, slo-motion dreamscape. It beautifully illustrates the devil may care lyrics, a resignation from the frustration of chasing and simply attracting.

“We created this video to celebrate the release of our new album,” says the band. “We felt that it needed a video of its own, which would also give our listeners a visual feel of Dazed…Aesthetically, Dazed encompasses 1980s Estrada Pop and the 1970s brutalist architecture that pierces the Minsk sky.”
