Newly formed post-punk duo Vague Lanes have debuted their first four-track EP, succinctly listed as Cassette. Dwelling in the realm of plodding goth and mellowed-out darkwave, the Bay Area music vets embrace thunderous vocals, driving drum machines, and sparse synth ornamentation as a backbone for their dual bass guitar amalgam.
Southpaw bassists both, Mike Cadoo (Gridlock, Bitcrush) and Badger McInnes (Here We Burn, After the Apex) blend early 90s indie and grunge elements as well as spacey synth into the mix, resulting in a unique blend of styles: a dark, sometimes forked tongue underbelly strangely juxtaposed against a playfulness.
Cure comparisons are easy here, as well as the driving simple melancholy of Joy Division (particularly in Nihilist Knot Twist), but New Wave/synthpop elements do creep in at times.
Cassette is also available via your favorite digital music service, well as through the Vague Lanes’ Bandcamp as a limited edition cassette and digital download.
