The audacious spirit that shook the underground youth of the ’80s is resurrected in a venture that dives headfirst into the maelstrom of the obscure and experimental, unafraid to thread together a diverse array of strange and shadowy sounds. Phoenix, AZ, darkwave outfit Tassel (Trey Sequeira, May Winterhalt, and Ashly X) rises from a cacophony of fear, disillusionment, and the never-ending search for something true in a world adorned with digital facades.
Bathed in razor-sharp synths and driven by the relentless beat of industrial, punk, and dance rhythms, Tassel fuses gritty intensity with infectious grooves, crafting a ghostly sonic spectacle that haunts the new era. It’s raw, it’s real, and it doesn’t pull any punches.
Their new single, “X.” evokes a sense of abandonment and emotional isolation, describing a feeling of being forsaken and cold, both physically and emotionally. There’s a yearning for salvation, possibly in the form of an escape or a release, but the outcome remains uncertain.
The video, a twisted creation by Ashly X, May Winterhalt, and YZBL, is a glitch-ridden VHS fever-dream drenched in leather, PVC, and blasphemous creativity with a crucifix. It’s like a slow-motion drug trip through a foreign dive bar’s seedy underbelly—sleazy, sultry, and steeped in sacrilege. The whole thing oozes a kind of grimy allure, dragging you through a dark alley of debauchery.
