My favorite stranger stands in my mirror
Puts words in my mouth All broke and bitterIn a poignant exploration of identity and duality, Depeche Mode’s suspenseful synth diversion My Favourite Stranger (from Memento Mori), co-written by Martin Gore and Richard Butler (Psychedelic Furs), paints a haunting tableau of an individual’s relationship with an elusive other. This “perfect stranger” not only mirrors the protagonist’s actions, but also trespasses on their very essence…moving stealthily, mimicking speech, and eerily echoing footsteps. This doppelgänger embodies the darker, perhaps suppressed facets of the psyche. Through evocative imagery of stolen shadows and echoed conversations, the song explores themes of self-recognition, confrontation, and the unsettling realization that our most intimate stranger might be the reflection we see in the mirror.
Anton Corbijn’s visual interpretation of the song is as enigmatic as the lyrics, themselves. His monochromatic palette not only accentuates the surreal, dreamlike quality of the narrative but also magnifies the tension inherent in its suspense. The solitary figure, cloaked in ambiguity with a wide-brimmed hat, becomes both the protagonist and the enigma, a symbol of the elusive “perfect stranger” that the song contemplates. As the character traverses through varied terrains—from the mystic woods to an antiquated European shop—it’s the viewer who is ensnared in a game of chase, always on the periphery, always observing but never truly connecting. Corbijn’s choice to reveal mere flashes of the androgynous face ensures that the figure remains perennially out of grasp, much like the shadowy stranger in the song. While the climax promises a revelation, Corbijn smartly nudges viewers to embark on their own introspective journey to uncover the enigma.

In “Memento Mori,” Depeche Mode crafts an evocative narrative, melding both the looming existential weight of the pandemic and the haunting absence of their bandmate, Andy “Fletch” Fletcher. The album stands as a stark reminder of life’s transience and the inescapable approach of mortality. James Ford and Marta Salogni’s touch in the production imbues each track with a polished gravitas, creating an auditory experience that captures both personal loss and global upheaval.
Despite the dark title and prevailing themes of death, the album also becomes a celebration of life and the deep connections that endure. In embracing their sorrow, Depeche Mode delivers an album that is a testament to resilience, the evanescence of life, and the indelible marks we leave behind.
