A Spectral Guide Through The Woods — Vancouver Darkwave Act Ringfinger Debut Uncanny Video for “An Apparition”

Your shadow rules the night
Another day
A dream in black and white
Washed away

Frantically dipping into courageous introspection with gothic flair, Ringfinger teeters on the edge of an expansive aural breakthrough with their latest single, “An Apparition.” This tune teases as the final forerunner, setting the mood for their eagerly awaited debut, “In A Black Frame,” expected to make a splash this autumn.

The track vibrates with a powerful bass and drum machine’s precise rhythm, balanced elegantly with the ethereal strumming of guitars and phantom-like synthesizers. It surprises listeners with a communal anthem-like chorus, breaking the usual gothic conventions. Adding a slice of tragic romance, Hannah Dow-Kenny, the bassist and lead vocalist, delivers an emotionally charged spoken verse that drives Ringfinger down a fresh, yet comfortingly recognizable, creative path.

The tradition of pairing their songs with visually rich narratives continues, with this track’s accompanying music video, a cinematic masterpiece by Marcel Lafonde. The visual narrative, an echo of the storyline from 2022’s “Chamber of Roses,” dives deep into a cryptic murder mystery and its ensuing aftermath, all presented through the unsettling medium of a VHS tape found in a secluded forest.

Bennett Taylor, the actor who etched a lasting impression with his portrayal of Raphael Adoloni in the 2022 Predator sequel, “Prey,” takes center stage. Awakening in a dream-like forest, guided by an ominous phantom, he embarks on a gripping journey to comprehend his predestined fate. There are shades of The Blair Witch Project and The Wicker Man, certainly, but also a Hitchcockian chill of suspense as we watch the horror unfold across the actor’s expressive face.

If you find yourself drawn into the captivating realms of goth classics and the new wave of goth that’s riding high on the global charts— acts like Twin Tribes, She Past Away, Drab Majesty, Kælan Mikla, and Ritual Howls, the hauntingly serene sound world of Ringfinger is as familiar and cozy as a cup of cocoa and a velvet blanket. Their music rings out like a mournful hymn echoing from a long-lost catacomb, a call to those whose hearts beat in sync with the darker, more profound harmonies of life.

Formed in the summer of 2019, Vancouver’s Ringfinger walk the ethereal line between darkwave and post-punk. Equally inspired by cold Canadian winters, horror films of the past, and the forebears of their genre, they wield swirling chorused guitars amid synth pads and delay- drenched vocals. A duo backed by drum machines, Ringfinger consists of Hannah Dow-Kenny on bass, synthesizer, and vocals, and Mason McMorris on guitar, synthesizer, and vocals.
