A Dark Desire — Greek Darkwave Duo Selofan Debut Their Haunting Video for “Lucille”

Unplug the stereo
Embrace the silence
I don’t want to hear nothing but your brilliant lies

In the pantheon of global underground music, Athens-based duo Selofan are celebrated for their sincerity, depth, and unrivaled DIY ethos. Comprised of the hauntingly talented Joanna Pavlidou and the enigmatic Dimitris Pavlidis, the band has made an indelible mark in darkwave, post-punk, and synthpop. Their unwavering commitment to artistic vision and ever-evolving sound has taken them from intimate local venues to the grand stages of international festivals. Their music, echoing the halcyon days of the ’80s underground, has enraptured a devoted following and garnered critical acclaim, firmly cementing their place as the vanguards of music’s darker side.

In their latest single, “Lucille,” a song sung by Dimitris Pavlidis, the narrative unfolds like a gothic fairytale, cloaked in the spectral echoes of Ultravox and Clan of Xymox. The lyrics weave a tale of a tempestuous affair, where danger and desire dance in the moonlight. Dimitris’ voice guides us into a nocturnal world where Lucille, with her “graveyard eyes” and “brilliant lies,” ensnares him in her haunting embrace. Clad in leather with an allure that cuts the air like thunder, Lucille serves brandy laced with teardrops, a symbol of their all-consuming passion. Their bond burns with an intensity that transcends the mundane, touching the very edges of the supernatural.

The black-and-white video, directed by Tassos Gkoletsos, is a visual symphony of mystery and allure. A mansion shrouded in shadow, an enigmatic inhabitant—these are the stage and players in this eerie tale. As the protagonist steps into this haunting abode, the air thickens with anticipation. Is he to find his escape, or will he linger forever, a tragic figure akin to the one in Sunset Boulevard?

Lucille is included on Selofan’s latest album, Animal Mentality, which marks a remarkable milestone after a decade of musical innovation and growth. Animal Mentality navigates the elemental currents of human emotion and experience, all set against the distinctive backdrop of Selofan’s darkwave sound. Each track on the album explores different facets of the human condition, from the depths of desire to the ache of isolation, showcasing the duo’s deep understanding of the complex spectrum of human emotions and personal experiences.
