Bad dreams wrapped up in midnight whispers left us tranquilized
Reflections twisted into something we can’t recognize
The walls are coming down
Are we not better for it now?
We can sleep tonight with stories that we tell ourselves
Los Angeles outfit Sleek Teeth plunges headfirst into the undercurrents of existential unease with their latest offering, Same. Melding the ghostly echoes of early ’90s dancefloor allure with rhythms sharp enough to slice the fog, their newest release navigates emotional territories where ethereal beauty collides with human frailty. Here, Sleek Teeth reveals a mastery in balancing evocative pop croons reminiscent of Talk Talk’s Mark Hollis, set against a backdrop charged by electronic pulses echoing the stark minimalism of Depeche Mode, Cabaret Voltaire, DAF, and Fad Gadget.
Directed with precision by Adrian Stucker, the video for Same explores an eerie duality, capturing parallel selves locked in internal conflict. Framed by disjointed visuals that blur and double, it symbolizes the friction of self-sabotage and perpetual recurrence, as if two disparate spirits share a single body. Walls figuratively crumble, serving as stark metaphors for the breakdown of protective illusions, exposing concealed anguish and raw vulnerabilities beneath the surface.
Stucker’s camera work is precise yet dreamlike, each frame echoing the song’s exploration of habitual error and reluctant introspection. The video’s muted palette juxtaposed with quick flashes of intensity elegantly mirrors the inner turmoil inherent in repeating patterns and secret burdens. It’s a dance of discomfort and acceptance, elegantly matching Sleek Teeth’s subtle rhythms and spectral melodies.
Same acts as a mirror reflecting humanity’s compulsion to revisit familiar failures, captured through layers of ghostly vocals drifting atop restrained yet compelling electronic beats. It vividly sketches our intrinsic pull towards self-destruction and the paradoxical comfort found within cyclical mistakes. Sleek Teeth have delivered an evocative visual companion, an arresting exploration of the uneasy coexistence of our conflicted selves, rendered in stark and poignant clarity.
