Somewhere in the fog-drenched shores of California’s Bay Area dwells Blood Rave, James Rogers’ venture into goth-infused techno terror. Having cut his teeth with groups like Fearing and Creative Adult, Rogers now delves deeper into an underworld of EBM thuds and spectral synths, building tracks for dance floors soaked in shadows and dry ice.
Blood Rave’s newest conjuring, Dead Inside, comes with an enigmatic video directed by Miwah Lee and Tanner McCardel. The visuals neatly match the eerie pulse of the music: synthesizers flicker amid shadows, and there’s a playful menace lurking within. It’s somewhere between London After Midnight’s velvet-coated theatrics and the harsh edges of early Ministry: a danceable dirge cloaked in synthetic gloom.
We are placed squarely in the domain of a peculiar gent with a fondness for coffin naps and sinister serenades. This fellow, part ghoul, part maestro of menace, entertains from behind the keys of a battered pump organ…a curious instrument as decrepit as the vibes he emanates. It’s the perfect setting for a midnight rendezvous, or perhaps a séance with a wicked sense of rhythm.
Amid this cryptic lair, the scene is set for unsuspecting wanderers to stumble blissfully into danger, guided by Rogers’ sepulchral voice. It’s deep, resonant, and just unsettling enough to quicken the pulse, serving dark dance an invitation edged with an alluring threat.
