“Where the Shadows Bend” — Cathedral Bells Cross into Another World With Haunting Dreampop Single “Put Me To Sleep”

when I wake up again
will it still be the same reality
or just another dream

There are mornings when the dream takes longer to leave than the person drifting in it. We open our eyes certain that someone has just spoken, that a hand has rested beside ours, that a place we have never visited is somewhere we could find again. Falling asleep reverses that confusion: the room recedes while another world acquires its own unquestionable logic. At either end of the night, reality briefly loses its authority.

Each night, we submit to a small rehearsal for death, giving up our hold on the familiar and trusting that we will return. We cross into another world, meet its inhabitants, and accept its impossible arrangements. Hamlet’s fear of “what dreams may come” in the sleep of death troubles that same border: who can promise what awaits us once we have surrendered consciousness? Waking offers its usual reassurance, though the ache of a reunion that never happened can make the daylight feel considerably less convincing.

Cathedral Bells approach that uncertain crossing with their new single “Put Me To Sleep.” Led by Matt Messore and now based in Los Angeles, the band brings a tender physical warmth to questions about disappearance, memory, and whether the world will still be waiting when we open our eyes.

Soft drumbeats and gentle synthesizer tones open the song, leaving room for sustained guitar chords to spread around a delicate lead melody. Deep, warm bass gives the arrangement a reassuring weight beneath its suspended guitars. Messore’s singing is as soft as a down pillow, the words delivered with an intimacy that draws the listener closer. Classic 4AD-era dreamy post-punk provides a steady framework for the overlapping textures of dream pop and shoegaze; the layers gather around the voice without disturbing its quiet delivery. There is much here for admirers of Slowdive’s patient guitar work and The Radio Dept.’s hushed pop sensibility.

The lyrics ask whether waking will restore the same reality, and whether a loved one can still be remembered when the world loses its shape. A desire to escape the life we know carries the fear of losing our way back to one another. The repeated request to let go makes sleep an act of surrender, while something waiting beneath the ground brings the grave into view. Messore keeps these questions close to the body: the need to rest, the wish to remain beside someone, the uncertainty of what either person will remember on waking.

Cathedral Bells began in Florida in 2018, growing from Messore’s bedroom recordings into a touring band. Their self-titled 2019 EP preceded Velvet Spirit (2020), Ether (2021), and Everything At Once (2023). This April brought Parallel Dreams, their debut album for Artoffact Records, which introduced a more spacious approach and further slowcore influences. The band describes “Put Me To Sleep” as the beginning of a new chapter following their move to Los Angeles.

Following their October 29 appearance with Mind’s Eye and Tony Jupiter at the Roxy in Los Angeles, California, Cathedral Bells will support Alison’s Halo on a run of December dates through the western United States.
