Trip-hop icon Tricky will return to the U.S. and Canada this fall for his first North American shows since 2018, announcing a 17-date run behind his forthcoming new album, Different When It’s Silent.
Different When It’s Silent, due out on July 17 via Tricky’s own False Idols label, is his 15th studio album and his first full-length release under the Tricky name in six years. The record follows 2020’s Fall to Pieces, as well as a prolific run of projects that includes the collaborative Lonely Guest, the Fifteen Days project with producer Mike Theis under the name Theis Thaws, and last year’s joint record Out The Way with Marta Zlakowska.
The new album’s first single, “Out Of Place”, features Zlakowska, whose restrained vocal is set against Tricky’s urgent, almost punk-like delivery. Originally written for Marta’s own album, the song eventually found its way back to Tricky and closes out Different When It’s Silent.
Recorded between Tricky’s home in France and sessions in Bristol, the album also features Bristol singer Mitch Sanders, whose soulful falsetto runs through much of the record. Across fourteen tracks, Different When It’s Silent reportedly blends skeletal blues, brooding electronics, distorted guitars, and stark hip-hop rhythms into a sound that reconnects with the distinctive language Tricky has been bending since his groundbreaking 1995 debut, Maxinquaye.
“In my mind it was another side project,” Tricky says of the album. But after hearing the material, his manager, Alan McGee, felt the songs clearly belonged to a Tricky record.
“I just love making music,” Tricky says. “I’m grateful I’ve had the chance to live this life and keep creating.”
