Spiraling down rabbit hole those unknown
To the lives of this time
Feeling uneasy with what I see
Inside I need to unwind
San Diego’s underground scene hath spawned The Marcelas: a fresh collision of goth and punk spiked with Chicano spirit. Their debut carries an energy steeped in late-night creature features and tongue-in-cheek existential dread, delivered effortlessly through a potent mix of English and Spanish lyrics that would charm any midnight misfit swaying through their personal funeral march.
Though newcomers, The Marcelas echo the blistering vitality of bands from another era, serving up performances ripe with theatrical flair at local clubs, capturing the smoky mystique of Bauhaus crossed with the fierce irreverence of Dead Kennedys. Metal clashes, drums thunder, and guitars shriek as if tearing through graveyard gates at full throttle.
Their latest single, Lobotomy, finds brothers Hector and Diego Altamirano, alongside Marcos Macabra, diving deeper into raw chaos, abandoning their earlier deadly romanticism for something more unhinged. This track unfolds like a fevered spiral into emotional turmoil, a desperate quest to erase haunting memories and betrayals through a metaphorical procedure. Here, psychological torment blends with spiritual anguish, painting scenes of relentless despair and chilling surrender.
The accompanying DIY music video, stark in its grainy monochrome, perfectly captures the unfiltered frenzy of their live act, cutting between frenetic stage antics and shadowy shots of the band skulking among tombstones. It’s loud, it’s reckless, and it aches with a wild urge to howl at the moon while escaping the clutches of a cemetery night.

The Marcelas asked local heavy hitter Bidi Cobra (Matte Blvck) to produce their EP, alongside Austin Speed Mixing and Mastering. A new EP is slated to be released this autumn.
