Amidst an aura of chilling desolation and non-existence, the stage paints a dark and gloomy tableau. Yet in this stark setting, the sounds and voices are not the focal point; rather, it’s the message that pierces through the shadows, demanding to be heard and contemplated.
The Netherlands’ frosty coldwave sensation Desinteresse, featuring the creative partnership of Bart (bass) and Sem (vocals/synth/guitar), unveils their much-anticipated debut album, “Voor Altijd.” This dark and dynamic duo masterfully constructs their distinctive din using authentic ’80s equipment, channeling the raw minimalistic energy of Fad Gadget, The Normal, Suicide, The Cure during their “Pornography” period, and Joy Division. For Desinteresse, the very act of embracing vintage gear becomes an artistic statement, a manifestation of their identity, and an unapologetic mode of self-expression. The pair staunchly embodies the DIY ethos.
The album, performed entirely in the Dutch language, opens with one simple question in the song “Is Er Nog Tijd?”: “Is there still time?” Intense themes of anguished isolation (“Koud”), painful introspection (“Ik Moet Gewoon Geloven”), and the paranoia of abandonment (“Angst Voor Niets”) set the stage for their emotional vocals set against hypotic, robotic beats.
