From the depths of Treviso, Italy comes the formidable duo, Kill Your Boyfriend, with a searing, hypnotic track called “The King”.
The frantic, otherworldly bacchanalia blends psychedelic aesthetics with 195os rockabilly, Voodoo-Psych – a bizarre, heady mix of the mysticism of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Exuma, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown; and the manic poetry of Suicide.
Matteo Scarpa and Antonio Angeli explore new genres and expand the sonic borders, creating a hyper-convulsive version of DIY indie garage. Taking inspiration from Michael Ventura’s essay Hear that Long Snake Moan, the band revolved their sound for this album around the idea that “the Voodoo rite of possession by the god became the standard of American performance in Rock’n’Roll,” where the performers “let themselves be possessed not by any god they could name but by the spirit they felt in the music.”
The accompanying video, co-directed by the band and Alice Lorenzon, is a visual invocation of spirit and sound, a whirling dervish of images and symbolism, evoking a psychedelic underworld of echoing voices, claustrophobic spaces populated by lost souls, and shamans.
