Never judge a book by its cover or an album by its sleeve, unless it is evoking the spellbinding and gossamer sonic resonance of classic 4AD found within the artwork of musician Matthew Doty’s solo debut as Deserta—Black Aura My Sun. which is likely to be one of the best shoegaze releases of the coming year.
Taking shape back in 2017, the album Black Aura My Sun was born out of the joy and the unknown world of fatherhood Doty was about to enter, and thus this deeply personal experience the record was written, recorded and mixed in total solitude.
Taking his compositional background in his 5 album run in post-rock outfit Saxon Shore over the past 2 decades (notably with bandmate and collaborator Josh Tillman aka Father John Misty,), Doty ventures into an interstellar reverie of sound furnished by lush guitars, drum-machines, pulsing keys, and ethereal vocals summoning soundscapes reminiscent of shoegaze luminaries such as Slowdive and Sigur Rós.
